Headless* basses are balanced, unbreakable, are more even from string to string and note to note, have better note definition, longer sustain, stay in tune better, are quicker for string changes, can be carried on planes, and are safer on stage.

Headstock are more prone to breakage and use significantly more wood in construction

The hybrid headstock lends the look of a traditional headstock with the advantages of headless tuning.

Neck-through* basses are stronger, have better sustain and note resolution.

Bolt-on necks have a punchier sound but are more likely to have dead spots.

Fretted

Fretless

A coated fingerboard gives a whining, trebly "fretless sound" and longer sustain which wears much longer with roundwound strings.

Uncoated fingerboards have a warmer, more natural sound but less sustain
